Gli ultravioletti possono avere sull’uomo effetti positivi: ad esempio, la produzione endogena della vitamina D3 (UV-B) e il cosiddetto “psychological well-being”(benessere psicologico).

Tuttavia, gli effetti negativi della radiazione UV non sono meno importanti. Essi possono essere di tipo acuto (a breve termine) o a lungo termine, di tipo a soglia o di tipo stocastico, e riguardano la pelle (eritemi, fotodermatosi, fotoinvecchiamento, tumori, ...), gli occhi (cataratta, pterigio, fotocheratocongiuntiviti, ...) e il sistema immunitario.

Nel corso del 2009, l’Agenzia Internazionale per la Ricerca sul Cancro (IARC) ha classificato la radiazione UV come un accertato fattore cancerogeno.
